The William Nelson Athletics Precinct is the home of Hastings Athletics, hosting invitation meets and weekly "club nights" every Tuesday during the season.

It also hosts the Potts Classic, a key event on the New Zealand athletics calendar. The facility was proud to host the NZ Track and Field Championships in 2021 and 2022, though both events were impacted by COVID-19 and held with limited attendance.

Opened in 2008 by Olympic silver medalist Nick Willis, the track is renowned for its speed, with many records being set. A standout moment came in December 2012 when Jacko Gill broke the world age group shot put record four times at the National Secondary School Champs.
