​​​​​​​The precinct is home to Hastings Athletics. The club stages a number of invitation meets and hosts their "club night" every Tuesday during the season.  It is also the home of the Potts Classic - a landmark event on the New Zealand athletics calendar.

The park had the priveledge to host the NZ Track and Field Championships in 2021 and 2022 which were both affected by covid so were operating at reduced numbers.

The William Nelson Athletics precinct is a world class facility. Olympic silver medalist Nick Willis opened the track in 2008 and commented "this track is fast, really fast. Lots of records will be broken here."

He was right but perhaps the most notable moment occured in the field during the National Secondary School Champs in December 2012 - Jacko Gill broke the world age group shot put distance four times!
